2016 Weekly Review - Week 9 [Bear Army defeated. 200K Milestone]

Quite a fair bit of happenings on week 9.

Finally a major turning point in the war against the Bear Army.  5 successive days of victory surely defeated the Bear Army......

There was no more Bear troops in my territory since Wednesday.  My portfolio turned positive on Wednesday (not counting dividends collected).

My total portfolio value jumped more than $10K just this one week and its value crossed 200K for the first time.

My worst performing counter is still Keppel Corp, but its unrealized loss has narrowed to 23.3% its invested value after week 9.  HPHT is second worst performer, with unrealized loss of 21% its invested value.  If the O&G rally continues, Keppel Corp will soon get pass HPHT.  SCI has recovered to unrealized loss of just 10.8%.

Reviewing my strategy over this 2016 Bear Attack, probably I should deploy more of my warchest.  I have used some when my portfolio first went negative.  Then I plan to use a second batch when my portfolio goes down 10%.

My portfolio had once declined more than 50% during the Lehman Bear Attack. But this 2016 Bear Attack has produced only a minor blip on my portfolio, and the loss never get close to 10%.

Time to lock up the warchest and maybe formulate a better strategy for the next Bear.  Back to the boring business of continuing with my monthly DCA

The weekly reviews end now.  Unless there is an episode "The Bear Empire Strikes Back"......

2016 Weekly Review - Week 8

Back and forth fighting continued with the Bear Army on Week 8.  That decisive victory against the Bear Army is still elusive.

My portfolio's unrealized loss widened slightly to 2.2% the total invested capital at the end of week 8 (not counting dividends collected).

Considering that my portfolio had once declined more than 50% during the Lehman Bear Attack, so far this 2016 Bear Attack has produced only a minor blip on my portfolio.

My worst performing counter is still Keppel Corp, with unrealized loss widened to 34.4% its invested value after week 8.  HPHT did badly this week and replaced Sembcorp Industries as 2nd worst performer.  HPHT has lost 26.1% its invested value and I am losing patient on its continuous decline.  Looking unlikely that spring will ever come for HPHT as in the case of CitySpring.

These 3 counters are key contributors to my portfolio's decline.  Let's see how low Keppel Corp and Sembcorp Industries can go.  But I just do not think they could go bust.

A lot of counters are still very tempting now but probably not the time to empty the warchest.  I will just continue with my monthly DCA.

2016 Weekly Review - Week 7

Week 7 is over and hopefully we have seen the bottom of the 2016 crash

My portfolio's unrealized loss has recovered to just 1.9% the invested capital at the end of the 7th week (not counting dividends collected).  Just one decisive victory and the fight against the Bear Army will be over.

Considering that my portfolio had once declined more than 50% during the Lehman Bear Attack, so far this 2016 Bear Attack has produced only a minor blip on my portfolio.

My worst performing counter is still Keppel Corp despite it's share price gone above $5 again.  Keppel Corp's loss improved a bit to 32.3% its invested value.  Sembcorp Industries also gain ground this week though still lost 23% its invested value.

These 2 counters are main contributors to my portfolio's decline.  Let's see how low Keppel Corp and Sembcorp Industries can go.  But I just do not think they could go bust.

A lot of counters are still very tempting now but probably not the time to empty the warchest.  I will just continue with my monthly DCA.

2016 Weekly Review - Week 6

The bad start to 2016 continues on to bad start to the Year of Monkey.  The fight against the Bear Army probably will turn into a long drawn fight.

The STI lost 3.2% on the 3 trading days this week and the Bear Army is pushing STI back towards 2,500 againMy portfolio done better, just declined 1.9% but my total lost increased to 4.8% at the end of the 6th week (not counting dividends collected).

Considering that my portfolio had once declined more than 50% during the Lehman Bear Attack, so far this 2016 Bear Attack has produced only a minor blip on my portfolio.

My worst performing counter is still Keppel Corp, and it lost further ground to 38.2% its invested value.  Sembcorp Industries has lost ground this week and has lost 31.5% its invested value.

These 2 counters are main contributors to my portfolio's decline.  Let's see how low Keppel Corp and Sembcorp Industries can go.  But I just do not think they could go bust.

A lot of counters are very tempting now and I know low could go lower.  Waiting for China's market to open next week, I did not buy anything this week.

Lastly, one good news for Saizen Reit, the special dividend declared already more than covered my invested cost.  So, the small punt on Saizen Reit is a profitable one.

2016 Weekly Review - Week 5

The fight against the Bear Army probably will turn into a long drawn fight.

Just when you think that the Bear Army is pushing STI back towards 2,500, a CNY rally on Friday pushed STI above 2,600My portfolio's lost narrow to 2.9% at the end of the 5th week (not counting dividends collected).

Considering that my portfolio had once declined more than 50% during the Lehman Bear Attack, so far this 2016 Bear Attack has produced only a minor blip on my portfolio.

Despite Friday's gain, my worst performing counter is still Keppel Corp, and it lost further ground to 37.3% its invested value.  Sembcorp Industries has recovered a bit but also has lost 27.4% its invested value.

These 2 counters are main contributors to my portfolio's decline.  Let's see how low Keppel Corp and Sembcorp Industries can go.  But I just do not think they could go bust.

A lot of counters are very tempting now and I know low could go lower.  But I took a calculated risk and had a small nibble on Saizen Reit, riding on hope of its soon favorable delisting

Wishing everyone Gong Xi Fa Cai and a Prosperous Monkey Year.

2016 Weekly Review - Week 4

The fight against the Bear Army probably will turn into a long drawn fight.

After a minor victory on Friday, my army gained some grounds and my territory's lost narrow to 4.0% at the end of the 4th week (not counting dividends collected).

Considering that my portfolio had once declined more than 50% during the Lehman Bear Attack, so far this 2016 Bear Attack has produced only a minor blip on my portfolio.

Two units in my O&G battalion were hardest hit in this 2016 Bear Attack.  My worst performing counter is Keppel Corp, which has lost 36% its invested value. Sembcorp Industries has recovered a bit but also has lost 28.2% its invested value.

These 2 counters are main contributors to my portfolio's decline.  Let's see how low Keppel Corp and Sembcorp Industries can go.  But I just do not think they could go bust.

A lot of counters are very tempting now and I know low could go lower.  But I took a leap of faith and had a small nibble on OCBC as part of my January DCA.

2016 Weekly Review - Week 3

The market is still trending downwards in 2016.

In spite of the mini gain on Friday, my portfolio's lost widen to 6.0% after the 3rd week (not counting dividends collected).

My worst performing counter is Keppel Corp, which has lost 36% its invested value.  The depressed oil price means Keppel Corp may not get back to its glory days of being a $12 stock for a long time.  Keppel Corp announced the final dividend payout of 22 cents on Thursday, which is about 40% less from 2015 of 36 cents.

Sembcorp Indust is not far behind from Keppel Corp and so far has lost 32.9% its invested value.  These 2 counters are main contributors to my portfolio's decline.  Let's see how low Keppel Corp and Sembcorp Indust can go.  But I just do not think they could go bust.

A lot of counters are very tempting now and I just about managed to stop myself from clicking the "buy" button this week.  Low could go lower.  But I think I will just continue my own DCA every month at the moment.

2016 Weekly Review - Week 2

I am taking a closer monitoring of my holdings this year as the Bear Army continues to run wild.  This is for reinforcement deployment planning (warchest).

Since the Bear Army launched the attack on the first trading day of 2016, it has taken over 4.6% of my territory after 2 weeks of fighting (not counting dividends collected).

In my rush in sending reserved units to the frontline on the first week, my reinforcement contingent was ambushed by the Bear Army (bank counters slided down too).

My worst performing counter is Keppel Corp, which has lost 38% its invested value.  The depressed oil price means Keppel Corp may not get back to its glory days of being a $12 stock for a long time.  Next week is Keppel Corp's financial reporting and it could be nasty.  I think it is impossible that Keppel Corp could maintain the 48c dividend as in 2015.  Maybe a 30-50% cut in dividend is possible.

Sembcorp Indust is not far behind from Keppel Corp and so far has lost 30% its invested value.

And most importantly, the current bear could be different from that Lehman Bear, and it could stay put here for a long time.  Let's ponder carefully before using our limited resources.
